Capstone Portfolio Journal - Module seven Reflections:
"The future is not something we enter. The future is something we create."

This week we were tasked with writing our 2nd of 3 main reflective essays: the future goals. More specifically, we had to identify three topics or areas of focus that you want to learn about in the future. (Samples taken from the instructions include technical skills, such as learning HTML and CSS. They could also be broader themes, such as leadership in education or integrating technology into a specific content area, such as mathematics).
In my case, my goals are to hone my leadership skills as an administrator at my University. However, as covered in my essay, I realized that the moments that I really learned a lot was when I stayed a genuine student to keep an open mind. As such I framed my future goals from the perspective of 3 areas of my life where I can actively play the student role.
I found this essay troublesome as I am creating these goals during a still global pandemic and not knowing exactly what the future will look like. There is lots of talk of permanent hybrid work schedules - I can’t even imagine what educational/networking conferences will look like and even something as simple as having to coordinate with people’s schedules for mentorship meetings for those not on campus all the time will look like in our not so far future state. Still, I take a moment here to acknowledge that I have still been able to grow in my communication skills and hone my discipline in order to keep myself motivated to continue workgroup projects and other training during this time.
I’m honestly very much looking forward to returning back to campus, even if it is just half time - nothing really replaces the feeling of interacting with colleagues and exchanging authentic energy in person.
